Friends Gala, May 14 @ 6 p.m. Friends of the Free Library of Philadelphia will hold our Third Annual Gala Fund-raiser and Silent Auction on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event will take place at Philadelphia's Independence Seaport Museum, located at Penn's Landing on Columbus Boulevard between Dock and Walnut Streets. Torresdale Friends Go Green On Saturday, March 15, 2008 members of Friends of the Torresdale Library joined volunteers from the nonprofit environmental group Northeast Tree Tenders to plant a tree on the Branch Library’s grounds at 3079 Holme Avenue. First and Third Saturdays of each month, now at 1:00 p.m. Come visit our children's section for an hour of stories for children of all ages with refreshments provided by our neighborhood Starbucks (20th and Callowhill Streets). Friends Groups

Branch Library Friends Groups (Friends Groups) are composed of neighborhood volunteers who work to promote and strengthen their local library by increasing awareness and ownership of this important educational and cultural asset to area residents.

What Friends Do:

Community strengthening: serving as a conduit for the variety of ethnic groups to enrich each another.

Advocacy: increase the visibility of the branch as a vital part of the community.

Volunteer Opportunity: augment library staff/receive valuable work experience.

Collection Development: Friends raise funds for books, CDs, videos, periodicals and computer programs that serve neighborhood needs.

More Card Holders Increase Circulation: educating neighbors about the importance of being a library card-holder resulting in increased circulation.

Programs: reading and computer literacy, book clubs, career strategies, English as a second language, gardening, health, arts and cultural and more.
