FFL

  • FFL will hold their next Alliance of Friends meeting on Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in the Skyline Room of Parkway Central Library.
  • Please join us for the Alliance of Friends Meeting on Saturday, January 31, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Skyline Room of the Free Library of Philadelphia: Parkway Central, 1901 Vine Street, 19103. We will discuss recent happenings and strategies for going forward in these difficult times. We also hope to distribute copies of the new Library Friends Manual.

    • The Black Candle: A Kwanzaa Celebration: Saturday, December 19 at 2:00 p.m. A showing and discussion of the film, The Black Candle: A Kwanzaa Celebration, narrated by Maya Angelou and directed by M.K. Asante, Jr. An exploration and celebration of the African American experience, the film traces the growth of the first celebration in 1966 to why the seven principles of Kwanzaa are relevant today.
    • Kwanzaa 101: Tuesday, December 15 at 6:00 p.m. A presentation by the Kwanzaa Cooperative on the history, meaning, and mission of Kwanzaa.

  • The Friends of Blackwell WPR will host a viewing of Sick Around the World on Wednesday, September 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. In Sick Around the World, FRONTLINE teams up with veteran Washington Post foreign correspondent T.R. Reid to find out how five other capitalist democracies -- the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Taiwan, and Switzerland -- deliver health care, and what the United States might learn from their successes and their failures.

  • Friends of the Lucien Blackwell West Philadelphia Regional Library is hosting a community information and exchange session on the West Philly Mural Arts Project, Love Letters on Monday, July 13, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. Representatives from the Mural Arts Program and the artist, Stephen Powers, will be there to explain the project and receive input from members of the community.

  • Lil' Filmmakers Movie Production Workshops: Kids and teens are invited to join in this fun series of workshops where they will create their own skit, film and edit it, and then preview the finished film at the final class. Workshops are from 3:30 to 4:30 at the Bushrod Branch on Thursdays: October 8, 15, 22, and 29.

  • Book & Film Club: Friday, August 14, 2009. The Book Club will meet to discuss Bright Lights, Big Ass by Jen Lancaster from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The discussion, led by Melissa Hope, will be followed by a showing of Confessions of a Shopaholic at 1:15 p.m. Refreshments will be served.   • Free homework, computer, and project help for teens on Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm, beginning February 7. Sponsored by the Friends of Bushrod. A certified trainer and educator will work with teens on multi-media, art & publishing, powerpoint, web design, presentation, instruction on using library software and much more!   • One Book and One Film at Bushrod. The Bushrod Friends Book/Film club will meet on Friday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m. to discuss The Soloist, the One Book, One Philadelphia choice for 2009. Afterwards, they will have a showing of Basquiat, the 2009 One Film choice.

  • The Friends will stage a Giant Book Sale on Germantown Avenue on Sunday, May 3.
  • The Chestnut Hill Branch Friends Group is sponsoring two lectures this Spring. The first, A Chef's Tour of Mexico by Owen Lee, will take place on Monday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. The second, on Wednesday, May 20, features Anna Dhody, Curator of the Mutter Museum, who will talk on "Archaeo-Forensics: Using 21st Century Technology to Solve 19th Century Mysteries."
  • The Friends host ongoing Used Book Sales every Monday afternoon at the library.

Coleman - NW Regional

  • The Friends of Joseph E. Coleman Library will sponsor an American Red Cross Blood Drive at the JEC-Northwest Regional Library on Monday, August 10, from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Presenting donors will be automatically entered in two raffle drawings: one for an overnight stay at an Atlantic City Casino Hotel which also includes a $200 gift card, and another raffle drawing to win a $25 gas card.
  • The Book Club Luncheon with author Lise Funderburg (author of Pig Candy) will be at the Coleman Branch on Friday, June 12 begining at 10:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required. Call the branch at 215.685.2150 to register.
  • The Friends of Coleman will hold a Flea Market fundraiser on Saturday May 23 starting at 12:00 p.m.

  • Santa Claus will visit the Donatucci Library on Saturday, December 12, 2009 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Fumo Branch Children's Librarian Liz Heideman will have story time before the visit at 1:30 p.m. Pictures with Santa caost just $3 and proceeds go to benefit the library.

  • The next Friends Meeting will be Wednesday, June 17 at 7:00 p.m. This will be their final meeting until September and they will be talking about finalizing our wine and cheese night on September 23.

  • On Saturday, May 16 the Friends of Donatucci will host a Family Fun Day and Flea Market at the branch from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We need all the help we can get. Springtime is a great time to clean out your basement and closets and bring your treasurers to the flea market. Maybe your treasurers will be gems to another treasurer hunter.

  • Fall Craft Show: Saturday, November 21
  • Book Sale: Saturday, November 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Membership Meeting and Falls Festival Concert: Wednesday, October 21. Meeting is at 7 p.m. followed by the Concert at 7:30. The Falls Festival is supported by the East Falls Community Council and consists of ten to fifteen major events during the month; the Friends of the library organizes the Concert. It is free to the public and consists of local entertainers.
  • The Friends of the Falls of the Schuylkill will be holding its annual Spring Sale on Saturday, May 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The sale features plants, baked goods, books, and refreshments.

Fishtown

  • Butterflies & Other Insects! Wednesday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. Come explore the world of insects with the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in our outdoor garden. Learn about various species, how they adapt to their environment, and the ways they undergo metamorphosis. Recommended for children in grades 1-5. Funded by the Friends of Holmesburg Library.
  • Master gardener Robin Potter teaches the secrets to using the colors you love most in your garden and landscape in Color in the Garden! Monday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. A Pennsylvania Horticultural Program for Adults.
  • On Wednesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. enjoy Ventriloquism with Marian and Friends! at Holmesburg Library. Enjoy the return of this fun and interactive ventriloquism show performed by a mother and daughter team. They are sure to delight the whole family with a lively cast of zany characters! The family program has been funded by the Friends of Holmesburg Library.
  • Judy Tudy: Clowning Around with Magic! Monday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Holmesburg Library. Come enjoy a family show combining magic and storytelling with Judy Tudy the Clown. Funded by the Friends of Holmesburg Library.
  • Friends of Holmesburg are funding Wildlife of Pennsylvania! at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6. Come meet live animals in our garden when the Schuylkill Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic brings animals to view up close. Independence

  • To Honor our Soldiers: a Veteran's Day Concert with Saul Broudy, presented by Friends of Independence Library. This is the first event of its kind at the Independence Branch. Saul Broudy, Philadelphia's renowned folksinger and storyteller, will demonstrate how soldiers' songs from the past 200 years reflect their lives at war, including material he collected on his tour of duty in Vietnam. Saul's avid sense of American music has earned him positions on several local humanities councils, over 25 estimable album credits, global audiences, and a PhD in folklore from Penn. The Friends of the Independence Branch encourage all ages to come learn and sing the songs soldiers sung from the Civil War to the Vietnam War with Saul. Independence Branch will host To Honor Our Soldiers on Tuesday, November 10 at 4:30 pm.

  • Independence Friends present an opportunity to exercise your artistic side though Book Making. You are invited to a free workshop on Saturday, May 16, in conjunction with the Athenaeum's spring exhibit "Enchanting Simplicity." From 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. adults and older teens will create a Flexigon art book. From 1:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. younger teens and middleschool-age children will create an accordion book based on poetry and art. Materials, other than personal items, will be provided at the workshop. Each workshop is limited to fifteen participants. While the workshops are free, please register by calling the library at 215-685-1633. If more than fifteen people register for a workshop, a standby list will be created in case of cancellations. These workshops are funded in part by a grant from the Philadelphia Activities Fund.

  • The Friends are hosting a Fundraising Concert for September 12, 2009 at the Korean United Church, 1200 Cheltenham Avenue, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature Milo Morris, bass singer; John Frazier, clarinet; Eva Young, piano; and Michael Ronstadt; cello. Miss Eva Young is a graduate of Oberlin Conservatory, University of Michigan and has a Licentiate in Piano Teaching of the Royal Academy of Music in London and has performed internationally. Milo Morris is a bass-baritone who sings opera and modern music as well as show tunes. He presented a concert at Woodmere Art Museum during Black History month last year. Following the concert, there will be a reception with food donated by the community and Whole Foods. Tickets are $15 for adults, $6 for teens, and children under 13 years are free. There will be a preview Champagne Reception for an additional $25 per person starting at 5:30 p.m. at the home of Marita Krivda and Michael Poxon. Free parking for the concert is available in the KUC lot at 71st and Old York Road. Tickets available in advance or at the door. Volunteers needed to sell tickets and donate for the baskets of cheer.

  • 2008-09 Amsterdam VII/PCI Library Friends Lecture Series: Philadelphia Architecture: the Built Environment will be the subject of the 2008-09 Amsterdam/PCI Library Friends Lectures. Speakers at the six lectures will include: Mark Alan Hughes, Philadelphia Director of Sustainability; Thomas Keels, Author and Architectural Historian; Daniel McCoubrey and Nancy Rogo Trainer, VSBA principals and project architects of the new Curtis Institute of Music structure at 1614 Locust Street; and Inga Saffron, Philadelphia Inquirer Architecture Critic. Other speakers will discuss the riverfronts and the parks. For the past six years, the Friends of the Philadelphia City Institute Library have presented stimulating lectures at the Free Library branch on Rittenhouse Square. The first three years focused on Philadelphia's still existing Treasures, starting with those founded in the 18th century: the First city Troop, the Library Company, Carpenters' Company, University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Hospital and Bartram's Garden. Crime was the topic of the 2007-08 series. Speakers included a psychiatrist who specializes in murders, a judge, an FBI agent, a white-collar-defense lawyer, federal prosecutors, and a crime journalist. The six lectures will be held at 6:00 PM on the first Monday of each month beginning with October, with the exception of November, when the lecture is scheduled for November 10, 2008.
